Obituary

Michael John Fletcher age 61 of Bridgeport, loving husband of 24 years to Katherine Szilagyi Fletcher passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 with his loving family by his side. Born in Bridgeport, CT on October 31, 1958, he was the son of the late Walter and Karen Macol Fletcher. Michael was a devoted parishioner of St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church.

A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, Mike loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Kathy, laying on the beach, drinking a “cold one” in the backyard with his sons-in-law (who he loved like sons), splashing in the pool with his grandchildren, and baking and decorating his infamous cakes. Mike was very proud of his Syrian heritage and loved teaching his grandchildren how to make Middle Eastern food. On Wednesday nights, Mike could be found sitting in his “command center” with Kathy, watching Survivor with his little buddy Joe tucked in next to him. For over 40 years, Mike was the owner and operator of Fletcher Home Improvement, where he gained not only customers, but many true friends. He was known as “Mr. Fix It” to all; there wasn’t anything that Fletch couldn’t fix or build and he taught his girls to be just as handy. He was also the unofficial “Captain of the Neighborhood Watch” and had the best lawn on the block. Mike’s greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren who referred to him as “Gidu” or “Gid”. He loved taking them for walks, going to hockey games, and figure skating competitions, and enjoying beautiful piano concerts.

In addition to his wife Kathy, Mike is survived by his three daughters: Kelly Paris and her husband Michael, Ashley Aguiar and her husband Michael, and Lindsay Fletcher and her fiancé Frank Diaz, two step children: Jennifer Carlson and David Lage, seven grandchildren whom he cherished: Mariella, Michael, and Lilliana Aguiar, Layla Paris, and Jacob, Nevaeh, and Jalei Diaz. He is also survived by his two sisters Patricia Boros (Gary) and Robin Jones (Peter), one sister in law, Elvira McLachlan, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mike was predeceased by his wife Deneen Lage Fletcher.

A “Rite of Burial” will be celebrated on Friday, October 16, 2020 at 10am in St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church, 5458 Park Ave, Bridgeport with the Archpriest Romanos Malouf and Arch Deacon Sami Bal officiating. Due to capacity restrictions, there will be a maximum of 65 people permitted in the church with family given preference. Burial will immediately follow at Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport. All those unable to attend the church service may follow the service live streamed by visiting the Saint Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church facebook page and meet directly at the cemetery. Calling hours will take place on Thursday, October 15th from 3 to 7pm in the Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St. Bridgeport with Trisagion services at 6pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Nicholas Church in memory of Michael. May His Memory Be Eternal.

We are so deeply saddened to hear of Mike's passing. We had the privilege of having him do a great deal of work in our house over the years and he was so wonderful each and every time. Having him in our house was always a pleasure. I so enjoyed talking to him and was always so impressed with his knowledge and his kind heart. We are sending our deepest sympathies to you, his beloved family, and we will be thinking of you all so much.

We were so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. Our job was one of the last that Mike was determined to complete prior to going for the surgery he knew would likely make it impossible for him to work again, but never did we imagine that would be the last time we see him. He was one of the kindest, most optimistic people that we have ever met. Getting to know him through the work he did in our house (during this crazy pandemic) was a blessing. We are deeply sorry for your loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time. May his memory live on in your hearts forever. He certainly touched ours.
